A WASH Centre for Kibera

29.11.2022 - 15:06 - Kenia
Unfortunately, access to safe water and sanitation is still not guaranteed in all regions of the world - including Kibera, a slum in the southwest of Nairobi. To change this situation, a WASH centre is currently being built for St. Juliet School in Kibera. In addition to better hygiene, this should also provide fairer educational opportunities for the vulnerable Kibera children.

Our project to build a WASH centre in Kibera is already making progress. Once completed, the centre will benefit over 500 students at St. Juliet School as well as the surrounding community. Small fees will be charged for the use of the centre, which will then be used to cater for running of the school including purchasing school supplies, as well as supliment school feeding for children most of whom are from poorer households.

The construction work continues

In May this year, the first steps were taken to make the WASH Centre become a reality. Since then, a lot has happened: the walls are already standing and the incinerator for the proper disposal of menstrual waste has also been completed and is currently still hardening. Soon, the two big water tanks and the roof will be built. Everyone is helping with the construction work - even young people and women from the neighbourhood are taking part in the construction work.

Proper hygiene has to be trained

Although the construction work for the WASH building is still in progress, the first hygiene workshops are already taking place. On 15.10.22, 520 children learned proper hand washing and other important rules for good hygiene on the occasion of the International Hand Washing Day. Besides such special occasions, the hygiene workshops are already an integral part of everyday school life, for example in the form of a hygiene club.

The project is supported by the BMZ (German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development), with Saxovent Smart Eco Investments GmbH providing the required 25 percent of its own contribution as a donation on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.
