A successful conclusion of the Youth in Humanitarian Action Congress

28.04.2016 - 09:34 -
Our first big congress – the Youth in Humanitarian Action Congress has come to a successful end: A positive feedback from the participants and a final document including 18 ideas, which were elaborated during the conference and subsequently finished online. 85 adolescents from 20 different countries took part in the congress. During three days they concentrated on the core issues and recent challenges of humanitarian aid.

With a view to the Humanitarian Summit (WHS) of the United Nations, taking place in Istanbul at the end of May, the final document was developed. It points out in which way young people want to participate in humanitarian aid and how this engagement can be encouraged.

Some examples of those 18 ideas are:

  • Integration of young people in local disaster management structures
  • Founding of Youth Innovation Labs as meeting places for the local adolescents and aid organizations
  • Development of projects under the direction of young people focusing on human right issues and gender equality
  • Development of Peace Education Programs for pupils and adolescents
  • Strengthening of voluntary involvement of young people in humanitarian aid projects
  • Expansion of engagement of law students in consulting refugees and asylum seekers

During the next few weeks the final document will be transmitted to our partner institutions and political decision-makers and hopefully will be presented at a side event of the WHS in Istanbul.

Within the scope of the Humanitarian Action Congress arche noVa invited 25 experts from humanitarian aid organizations and universities from Germany, Uganda and Jordan to Berlin, to elaborate together with the participants contents of the congress.

The workshops focused on topics like humanitarian principles, moral courage, medical assistance and humanitarian aid as professional field.

Konrad Menzel, project consultant at arche noVa, led a workshop, which introduced the principles of water and sanitary provision during humanitarian crisis to the participants.

Due to numerous and critically asked questions, lively debates and interesting discussions arose between participants and speakers at the congress.

The Youth in Humanitarian Action congress was organized by arche noVa and financially supported by the Federal Foreign Office and realized with the help of our partner organization Johanniter Unfallhilfe e.V.
