arche noVa supports Saxon libraries on their way into the future

In order to shape our society in an environmentally conscious and sustainable way, a rethink is necessary in all areas. Libraries play an important role as central places of education and information acquisition. In a current project, arche noVa supports Saxon libraries to act in a sustainable way by integrating ESD into their services.

The aim is to support libraries, especially in rural areas, in firmly anchoring ESD in their everyday work. But what exactly is ESD? Education for sustainable development - ESD for short - enables people to think in a sustainable way, to understand the effects of our actions on the world and to behave accordingly.

From September to November 2020, the cooperation project between the Saxon State Office for Libraries and arche noVa, which is financed by the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, will run, in which above all so-called central libraries in Saxony will be made fit in the area of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). In addition to extensive collections of material on the topic, the librarians receive further training in online workshops lasting several hours and in some cases receive individual advice and support.

I am happy about the cooperation with the libraries, because they are a good place to learn for the target group of adults, whom we otherwise cannot reach so well with ESD offers. Librarians know their readership best and know how to set sustainability as a theme.

Claudia Holbe - Coordinator of the project and Head of Global Learning/BNE at arche noVa

At the first consultation meeting at the beginning of October in the Weißwasser library, for example, the idea of a "library of things" was born. There, people could borrow objects that not everyone has at home, but which could be necessary for implementing activities from books - be it silicone moulds for making soap, a sewing machine, a telescope or certain tools. Such a library encourages borrowing instead of buying and thus contributes to sustainability and environmentally conscious consumption.

The place of the library is of particular importance in the sense of this mission, as it is one of the most important free, out-of-school access points to knowledge. At this place, reading, information and media skills are promoted and thus also the cultural participation of the individual. Thus, a part of the foundation for the fulfilment of the sustainability goals, which were formulated in the "Agenda 2030" in Germany, is laid. And so arche noVa supports not only libraries and readers, but also entire communities on their way towards the future.
