The St. Juliet Educational Centre is a community school in the Kisumu Ndogo district of Kibera. Clearly recognisable by its blue roof, the school stands out from the cramped houses of the slum.

At St. Juliet School, children and young people receive a primary school education that opens up career prospects for them. Most of the pupils are happy about the opportunity and participate actively in the lessons.

One of them is Fantesia Khayesi. The 14-year-old would like to work as a doctor one day.

The pupils are looked after and taught by 16 teachers. Hellen Ajera, who has been teaching at the school for six years, would like to see better learning materials for the children and young people. She is happy that the school offers regular meals, because these motivate the students to attend classes regularly.

Another teacher at the school is Chris Musonye. He has been at the school for 14 years and teaches mainly in the sixth grade. His dream: computers and digital technology. " If we had desktop computers, we would already be a step ahead in digital learning," says Chris.

Josephine Muchilwa also has future dreams for the school. At the moment, she teaches third grade. She would like to see a playground added to the school. But first and foremost, she is now looking forward to improving the school toilets.

Currently, there are few toilets and hardly any sanitation facilities. "[New] toilets and [a safe] water supply in the school would greatly improve sanitation and hygiene, and thus the learning environment," Madam Muchilwa says.

In addition to the toilets, the water supply is also very poor at the school and in Kibera. A lot of repair work is needed. However, there is often no money for this, which is why even small things, like this broken water tap, are difficult to replace.

arche noVa would like to start here and provide financial means within the program to improve the WASH situation at the school and in the neighborhood. Agnes Chepkorir leads the project on site.
