A week ago, a severe earthquake rocked large parts of Myanmar. It is still unclear how many people lost their lives. One thing is certain, however: the survivors are literally facing the ruins of their existence. There is not enough drinking water, sanitary facilities have been destroyed, and they have no way to wash. Victims are still buried under the rubble.
At this time of year, temperatures in Myanmar are around 40°C. The lack of hygiene is correspondingly dramatic.
No one should have to live in such conditions. To prevent a health crisis, those affected need comprehensive assistance as quickly as possible. However, many international aid organizations still do not have access to the earthquake zone.
Together with local partners, we can provide fast and effective help
We have been working with local partner organizations since 2008 to improve the living conditions of people in Myanmar. Even before the disaster, every second child there lived in poverty, according to the United Nations.
In the current situation, cooperation with local helpers is a great help in providing effective support. On the day of the earthquake, we activated our partners in Myanmar, and within a few hours they were on the ground in the affected regions. They are currently distributing materials for setting up emergency shelters and hygiene products such as soap and disinfectants.
Those affected in rural areas must not be forgotten
Entire villages outside the major cities have also been destroyed. So far, there are hardly any offers of help for people living outside the major cities. Our partner is active in the South Shan region and focuses on rural areas.
The need for help is incredibly great, but our resources are limited. We would like to do more to support the people of Myanmar in this exceptional situation – your donation makes it possible.
