Although local actors play an increasingly important role within humanitarian aid, they are often marginalized. The cooperation with local organizations is one of arche nova’s key concerns. Hence we strengthen the capacities of our partners. Under the leadership of the German WASH-network and with arche noVa as hosting organization, 30 participants from eight countries took part in a workshop on issues about water and sanitation supply in emergencies at the end of October in Myanmar. They exchanged practical experiences, gained knowledge and improved their network.

The workshop on „Water, sanitation and hygiene supply in emergency“ took place in Yangon (Myanmar). Employees of local and international Nongovernmental Organizations, which are active in emergency and transition aid, had the opportunity to improve their skills, to discover the latest development in this sector and to exchange about the various strategies in different areas of Asia. Also the cooperation between local organizations and their international counterparts played a significant role. The participants brought their diverse points of view on challenges in emergency relief.

External speakers shared their knowledge: Guy Kakumbi who works for Unicef provided insight into working with UN-agencies. Kin Maun Wing from Myanmar talked about disaster preparedness and adaption to climate change. The German Toilet Organization and arche noVa shared their experiences in water and sanitary supply: „The high motivation of the workshop participants was a great enrichment. There were bright debates and reports of own experiences.” said Konrad Menzel from arche noVa.

The workshop is part of a portfolio of measures to implement the strategy of the German WASH sector of the WASH Network and is funded by the German Humanitarian Assistance.
