Immediate help for the people in Bhalo Bhati

At a moment’s notice 168 people in our project village Bhalo Bhati lost their home. 28 houses and a parish hall had to give way to the construction of a new drainage channel. To relief the first distress we distribute blankets and food among the affected families.

Two months ago our project village Bhalo Bhati in the Pakistani district of Sindh received the notice that the local authorities intended to build a drainage channel nearby. At this time it was not certain whether the construction works would affect the village directly. Eventually the village commune came to know that the new channel was to be built next to an already existing irrigation canal. The consequences for the village inhabitants were fatal: though it is not often required, the land 30 meters to the left and to the right of the channel is property of the Pakistani government regardless of whether there are buildings already or not. The responsible court dismissed the commune’s complaint.
The inhabitants of Bhalo Bhati had to vacate the country alongside the channel and give up their houses within a very short period of time. Already a few days after the nonsuit the first diggers arrived and builders started to demolish the houses.
The only reason why the homeowners had enough time to save their belongings and demount everything that was reusable, as e.g. doors, windows and metal carriers, was the intervention of arche noVa. All in all 28 houses and a parish hall were demolished. More than 168 people lost their homes overnight.

Many of the affected families found refuge in the school while others could stay with their neighbors during the first days. Throughout the winter the temperatures in Sindh drop to the freezing point. To relief the immediate suffering we distribute blankets and tarpaulins.

Although the families can rebuild their homes elsewhere in the village, many men are day laborers who cannot earn any money while rebuilding their houses. Therefore we distribute food for the next two weeks to support the people in Bhalo Bhati during the first critical stage of rehabilitation.
