arche noVa signes Youth Compact at the World Humanitarian Summit

27. May 2016 - Turkey
The first World Humanitarian Summit (shortly: WHS) on 23-24 May 2016 came to an end with a huge standing up for humanity.

During hundreds of events and panel discussions the around 9.000 participants from 173 States could exchange views about necessary reforms in the area of Humanitarian Aid.

At the Side Event “Youth at the Heart of Humanitarian Action”, which arche noVa has co-organized the focus laid on the potential and the role of young people in the Humanitarian Aid. Young people from different countries of the world came together, to discuss possibilities to strengthen the position of youths in Humanitarian Aid. Jonas Erhardt, who represented arche noVa on site, rates the event as a success: “The side event went very well. We received much praise, because the audience got a chance to speak – on the contrary to all other events. Due to the interactive and dynamic concept a lot of ideas could be discussed and concertized.”

During the WHS the Compact for Young People in Humanitarian Action was officially launched. This convention should guarantee a better support for youths in crisis situation. As all agreements concluded on the WHS are self-obliged, the context of the compact is purposely kept open, because Governments and organizations should not be discouraged by obligations. This approach seems to be working out well. A lot of the major institutions have already signed the compact on the spot, like United Nations Population Fund, United Nations Children's Fund, United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, UN Women, UKAID and many other participants. Also the Federal Government of Germany and the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) pledged their support.

With arche noVa, the so far only German organization, Plan International, Restless Development, War Child and others, also a lot of NGOs are part of the supporters and signatories.

In the future arche noVa will draw special attention to the concerns and interests of young people in the Humanitarian Aid and further support their potential and engagement.
