Water for the fruit trees in Beit Al Faqs

As part of our project, the entire irrigation system was renewed in cooperation with the local partner organization Mada.

Our team visits the construction site. At this point, the central irrigation canal is routed over a small bridge. Everything has been constructed to withstand heavy rain. Construction costs of around 100 euros per meter are to be budgeted for.

The investment is paying off. The canals looked like this before: overgrown and dilapidated. A lot of water seeped away unused.

In the new canals, the water flows without disturbance to the fields, where it is directed through small gates.

In Beit Al Faqs, many families live from fruit growing. Most of them only have small plots of land of around 2,000 square meters. Their harvests depend on irrigation working.

Khaled Ali Osman has been working on his family's land since his youth.

The farmer sprays water on his apple trees. However, the main irrigation takes place through the canals.

The families sell the best fruit to traders for export to the Gulf states. The rest goes to the local market in the next larger town. Hussein Ali Osman and the other farmers only take the small or rotten fruits for their own consumption.
