Dam, well and hand pump: safe water in Nthangathini Village
Building a sand dam is both a technical feat and teamwork. The construction plan, expertise and guidance come from our local partner organizations. The local self-help groups contribute ideas, building materials and working hours.
The sand dam in Nthangathini Village has already been built. During the first rainy season, it has already collected water. At the same time, sand has settled in front of the wall, which will store water in the coming dry seasons.
Janet Wavinya Kyalumbi and the other farmers of the village have been able to irrigate their fields since the sand dam was built. The farmers grow maize, beans and cowpeas, among other crops, for own consumption and for sale.
