Over a period of seven years, Ronny Daniel Keydel from the arche noVa-based Fachstelle Globales Lernen & BNE in Sachsen, together with 21 authors and his colleagues Mara Kayser and Carola Mohn, realised the elaboration of the teaching examples. The project is aimed at teachers of all school types as well as all other interested parties from the field of education.
Questions over questions
How can we shape the economy in a fair and sustainable way and what has to change so that later generations will find a world worth living in? What kind of society do we want to live in in the future? And why do conflicts arise and how can they be resolved peacefully? From now on, questions like these can be worked out together in the most diverse educational institutions.
With the help of the newly created ESD teaching materials, pupils can gain knowledge about the global challenges of our time and acquire skills for shaping a sustainable society. For this purpose, a project coordinated by arche noVa e.V. under the auspices of the SMK and accompanied by the State Office for Schools and Education has just been completed.
The teaching examples bring global perspectives into the classroom. They get students into action and also shed light on topics that have so far not been addressed in class, or only inadequately.
Which topics can now be worked on?
In terms of content, the project includes 21 sustainability topics, all of which come from the orientation framework for the learning area of global development, which the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs agreed on with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. There is a wide range of topics to choose from, including globalisation, urban development, mobility, war and peace, migration as well as trade and consumption of goods from all over the world. The aim of the project is to anchor Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the classroom in the long term so that schoolchildren and young people are sensitised to challenges and issues relevant to the future.
"For the solution of today's challenges, it is not enough to focus on Saxony. Many questions for the future will be decided by whether we find a global understanding for each other and whether, when we call for justice in the future, we mean all people worldwide or just ourselves and our neighbours."

Access to the material is available on the website www.bne-sachsen.de, where interested teachers can use a filter to find and download suitable teaching examples from the 248 available. Whether primary school, secondary school or grammar school - there is something for every type of school and every age group. The material can easily be sorted by school type and downloaded according to subject and grade level. The contents have been adapted to the Saxon curricula and can thus be woven into the lessons at the appropriate point.
Some lesson examples are now even translated into Sorbian at the State Office for Schools and Education, so that Sorbian-speaking educational institutions/schools can also benefit from the offer. In the future, many results of the arche noVa project will also be found in the new dynamic curriculum database, where suitable support for each learning area of all subjects of the different school types is stored.
